GE Vernova to deliver the world’s first 245 kV SF₆-free gas-insulated substation for RTE

GE Vernova announced today that its Grid Solutions business will manufacture, deliver and commission the world’s first 245 kilovolt (kV) SF₆-free gas-insulated substation (GIS) for RTE in France. Grid Solutions will deploy its advanced B105 SF₆-free GIS, a solution that will support RTE in replacing sulfur hexafluoride, SF₆-a gas with a global warming potential 24,300 times greater than CO₂-with its g³ alternative. g³ allows for about 99% reduction in CO₂ equivalent of the gas contribution to global warming compared to SF₆.

EU supports GE Vernova’s project by co-funding the creation of a retro-fitting solution to remove SF₆ from older 420 kV gas-insulated substation

The European Commission’s LIFE program, the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action, has awarded GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business €2.5 million to fund the creation of a solution to remove up to 60% of SFgas in its older T155 GIS.

EU affirms confidence in GE Vernova’s g³ technology by co-funding development of its 245 kV SF₆-free g³ gas-insulated substation

Paris, FRANCE –August 31, 2022 – The European Commission’s LIFE climate action program has awarded GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions business (NYSE-GE) €3 million to fund the realization of a full SF-free 245 kilovolts (kV) g3 gas-insulated substation (GIS) for onshore and offshore applications.

LifeGRID: An innovation serving the climate

Together, we are currently facing the biggest challenge in the history of humanity: preserving the living world, protecting our shared ecosystem and defending biodiversity.
GE Vernova is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through its technical and technological research and innovation work. With the LifeGRID project, we are enabling electricity transmission and distribution companies to reduce their CO2 emissions by using a more eco-friendly gas, g3, in their high-voltage circuit breakers.
